Reinsberg wins 2003 Commuters
Dillon posts solid weekend (67-69) for outright 2nd
--Bob Callan wins Senior Division

May 4, 2003- The last time someone won the San Francisco City Championship and the Alameda Commuters was 1988, when Bay Area legend Gary Vanier was playing some of his best golf. (he won the next two Commuters in '89 and '90)

Fifteen years later, Rick Reinsberg of Moraga completed his sweep of the two Northern California amateur "majors" today.

Reinsberg, a former professional who won the San Francisco City Championship (match play) earlier this year, made it look easy. He headed into final round of the tournament with a four stroke lead after three solid sub-70 rounds -- and that's exactly how the day wound up.

But tricky wins, difficult Sunday pins and a strong contingency of players chasing made the victory anything but easy.

Take the first hole for example. A 5-time champion, Bob Blomberg, sends a message with a quick birdie. The lead is down to three.

But Reinsberg answered with a birdie on No. 2, and another solid birdie at the tough par-3 7th, where his 3-iron tee shot stayed out of the wind perfectly. But there was plenty of golf left.

"The wind started blowing, and with the final round pin positions it became a lot harder to get it close," said Reinsberg.

When Blomberg started having trouble with his putter, James Hay stepped in and made several birdies. Reinsberg plodded ahead, his game plan of keeping it at par or better paying off down the stretch.

Reinsberg called the victories here and at the SF City his biggest career titles.

"I have great memories of College Golf at Cal, but I didn't win anything," said Reinsberg. "And amateur golf is great- as competitive as it you actually feel like your opponents are pulling for you to make a putt."

Reinsberg's season is far from over. He just qualified for the California State (CGA) Amateur, and will partner with his friend Scott Hardy next week in the NCGA Four Ball at Spyglass.

The two should be a formidable team.

Callan Wins Seniors
In the Senior Division, Bob Callan matched Reinsberg's margin of victory as his 70-71 = 141 total bettered J. David Carroll of Napa and Mike Butler of San Francisco who both shot 145.

Callan matched Reinsberg's "sweep" accomplishment (he won the SF City earlier this year) and although the Senior Division history of these events is shorter, the feat has never been accomplished. His 4-shot finish was also harder than it looked. With just three holes left, his lead was a slim 2-shots.

"I made birdie on 7 (our 16th) which was crucial. Mike Butler was in the group ahead and made a great par out of the bunker," said Callan.

Also like Reinsberg, Callan congratulated the entire Commuters' Committee and Senior Chairman Bob Blanchard on a job well done.

"The Commuters is the best-run event of all of those we play."
